to changing gun laws now in the wake of this latest massacre in newtown connecticut, with 26 people being dead and the big majority of nra members in favor of at least starter reforms to our gun laws, the biggest barrier to reforming our laws now may just be the pervasive common wisdom that it's not even worth it to try. modern history defies that common wisdom. but it persists. it persists, maybe. now, the last time we talked on the show about the long, long and long lost modern history and bipart san gun reforms was in the wake of the tucson shooting this past weekend. and in the wake of that shooting, the tucson shooting, this was the general assessment. gun control dead. a nonstarter. shootings unlikely to change laws. don't expect any changes. that was our random survey of the headlines last january after the tucson shootings. at least if you asked the beltway shooting gods. now it seems like the common wisdom may be less certain. look at the headlines now. and it's more like this. debate on gun control is revived. lawmakers call for tougher gun laws in wake of new town massacre. gun cont

and the continuing reaction to the newtown, connecticut, school massacre there. is some surprising news out of michigan on that issue today that we're going to be getting to. there is news about who is going to be in the united states senate in this next congress. we found out yesterday who is being tapped to replace senator jim demint, who is leaving the senate. we also found out yesterday who might replace john kerry if he leaves the senate to be secretary of state. we found out today who is the odds-on favorite to replace long-time hawaii senator daniel inouye, who died yesterday. we've got all that news ahead. >>> but we begin tonight with something that is an important story in its own terms. but for those of us at msnbc and nbc news, it is also an incredibly emotional thing. and i can tell you, it ends with good news. it ends with this news, which i can say personally was greeted by all of us as the best news in the world when we saw it. it's nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel, looking a little disheveled, a little less groomed than usual, but as you can see, looking like

newtown students went back to school for the first time since the massacre with police standing guard. two more young victims are buried, and the man involved in the investigation tells me about the horrors he saw inside the sandy hook elementary school. >> the crime scene itself is something that has made a mark in all of our minds. the task of that responsibility with the crime scene is something that we will never be able to erase. >> there will never be a good enough explanation why 20 elementary students were gunned down but we all need answers. i'm wolf blitzer reporting from newtown connecticut. state police is working around the clock. their investigation of the school massacre is very methodical and very, very painful. joining us now, lieutenant paul vance. he's become the face, the spokesman of this investigation. the connecticut state police. lieutenant vance, we're here in your office in middletown, connecticut. i know it must be hard on the journalists so it must be so much more hard on the men and women that work at the connecticut state police. what has it been like? >> it's

"to the people of newtown, we are with you today and in the weeks and months ahead." that was the word today from ron barber, who was shot and wounded in the mass shooting in tucson last year that killed six people and wounded 13, including the grievous wounding of congresswoman gabby giffords. ron barber, who took gabby giffords' seat in congress after she stepped down to deal with her injuries. he said today, "as those of us in tucson know, senseless acts such as these tear at the very fabric of a community." mark kelly, gabby giffords' husband said today, "i just spoke with gabby, and she sends her prayers from tucson." in oak creek, wisconsin, where four months ago there was another mass shooting at a sikh temple, another six people gunned down at that temple. a school superintendent there today told the local press that she cried when she heard the news out of newtown, connecticut. she said "we always think it can't happen here, and we pray fervently that it won't. but as we know from our experience this summer, it can happen anywhere." the mayor of aurora, col

to be with you. i'm terrell brown. most of the schools in newtown, connecticut, reopen today. sandy hook elementary remains an active crime scene. the site of friday's deadly shootings will remain closed indefinitely. 26 people including 20 young children were killed there. authorities hope to soon interview two survivors of the massacre. funerals, more of them, are scheduled for today. james mattioli was 6. his family says he loved sports, was a numbers guy, and best friends with his older sister. jessica rekos, also 6, loved everything about horses. she read about them, drew them, wrote about them, for christmas she wanted cowgirl boots. we have more. >> reporter: good morning. it's a rainy and somber morning in newtown where families have begun to lay their dead to rest, and more funerals are scheduled for days to come. it's back to school today for the children of newtown, connecticut, with one exception -- students of sandy hook elementary. kenneth canfield is a fourth grader at sandy hook. he was there that tragic day. >> he heard screaming and gunshots, and the room that he was in

shooting right now. >>> good morning, everyone. i'm john berman. we're in newtown, connecticut, this morning. >> i'm kate bolduan. you're watching our continuing coverage. it feels like we've been here a long time just trying to figure out what's going on with the story. president obama will be coming here later today and meet with some of the victims' families and we're told he will speak at a vigil being held tonight. meanwhile, the community is grieving. we saw more vigils here last night really moving vigils. 20 children and 6 adults died in friday's shooting inside sandy hook elementary. we should begin hearing the first funeral plans for some of the victims very soon. we also want to pass this along. the united way has set up a sandy hook school fund. donations, as you can see right there on your screen, donations sent to the newtown savings bank 39 main street right here in newtown, connecticut. this fund will be used to help pay for the funerals of the victims, john. >>> police say they have found important evidence during their searches at the school and at the shooter

as well as you might imagine. this is newtown, connecticut, for folks who are not familiar. this town is roughly about 27,000, 28,000 folks who live there. i live roughly 15, 20 minutes away from newtown, connecticut. it's a very small town, and this is one of those stories that affects you in a very personal -- even if you don't have children, for instance, one of our directors who works here at msnbc, i just saw him before i came out here. he was rushing home. he has a daughter who goes to this school, thankfully, according to his wife, his daughter is okay. he has talked to a number of parents who have children in this school who have described in vivid detail what transpired there some hours ago. some of the stories we are going to hear play out here over the mechanics few hours, but according to him, according to the director, one of the things that happened inside that school based on conversations that he had with his wife, at one point when the shooting started there were a number of adults in that building, presumably 250e67ers, but a number of adults who managed somehow to b
